You need a current Driver CPC card if you drive professionally — whether self-employed as a sole transport operator or employed by a company. You need both:
- A full driving licence for the vehicle category (C, C1, CE, D, D1, DE)
- A current Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) card
It is illegal to drive professionally without a CPC card. Penalties apply if stopped by an RSA transport officer or An Garda Síochána without one.

Maintaining your CPC qualification

- Bus CPC: complete modules 1-4 plus module 6 over 5 years (35 hours)
