What is EDT?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a structured training programme developed by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) of Ireland. It’s designed for learner drivers to enhance their knowledge, skills, and behaviour’s to become competent and safe drivers. The programme consists of 12 lessons, which must be completed before taking your driving test.


Why is EDT Important?

- Completing EDT is a legal requirement for all learner drivers issued their first learner permit on or after 4th April 2011.

- Car controls and safety checks
- Correct positioning
- Changing direction
- Progression management
- Correct positioning on the road
- Anticipation and reaction
- Sharing the road with others
- Driving safely through traffic
- Speed management
- Night driving
- Driving on motorways and dual carriageways
- Recap and consolidation
