How to Apply for
a Test Truck
Step 1:
Applying for the Theory Test
To obtain a learner permit for driving a truck in Ireland, you must complete the Driver Theory Test. This requirement applies if it’s your first time applying for a learner permit in the truck category, or if you’re upgrading your license within the truck category (e.g., from C1 to C) and have not yet completed the Theory Test for trucks in Ireland.
The Driver Theory Test for truck and bus categories is combined with CPC Part 1 and consists of a computerised exam with multiple-choice questions:
- Truck or Bus Only: 100 questions, cost €72.
- Truck and Bus Together: 140 questions, cost €84.
Revision materials are available in the following formats:
- Learning App for iOS or Android
- Book
- Online Learning Portal
You can apply for the theory test online at www.theorytest.ie. The test is conducted at various centres across the country.

Step 2:
Medical Report
You must obtain a ‘Driving Licence Medical Report Form’ from the NDLS, completed by a registered Medical Practitioner in Ireland. This form must be submitted to the NDLS within one month of its issue date.
Step 3:
Apply for your learner permit
You can apply for your learner permit online if you have a verified MyGovID, or in person at your local NDLS office. Ensure you have the following:
- Proof of passing the driver theory test within the previous 2 years.
- A fully completed medical report form, if required.
- Proof of your address dated within the last six months if different from your PSC application address.
- Proof of normal residence in Ireland if born outside the EU/EEA.
- Completed driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), if required.
- Application fee of €35 (waived if you are 70 or over). Payment can be made by credit or debit card.
Once you have your learner permit, you can begin taking truck driving lessons.
Step 4:
CPC Case Study
If you intend to become a professional truck driver and have never held a truck license in the EU or a recognised state issued before 10th September 2009, you must complete Driver CPC examinations.
After completing the combined Theory & CPC Part 1, you will need to pass a two-hour case study theory test, which costs €72.
You can apply for the case study exam at www.theorytest.ie/driver-cpccertificate-professional-competence
Study material includes nine case studies, though specific questions are not provided as it is a FETAC qualification.
The case study can be taken before or after obtaining your learner permit or full truck license.
However, you cannot drive professionally without a valid CPC.
Step 5:
Driving Test & Practical CPC
After passing your exams, apply to the NDLS for your full truck license at a cost of €55. To maintain your CPC qualification, you must complete one day per year (a 7-hour course) of CPC periodic training. Naas Driving Academy conducts these courses twice weekly.
If you are obtaining a truck license for personal reasons, you do not need to complete the CPC case study and practical CPC. If you later decide to drive professionally, you can complete the CPC, but test dates may take several weeks to schedule. You must do this within 2 years of completing the Theory Tests, or they will need to be retaken.
