Your Guide to Obtaining a Learner Permit in Ireland for Car, Motorbike and trailer

Welcome to Naas Driving Academy’s Essential Driver Training (EDT) Programme page! The EDT is a mandatory training course in Ireland that ensures beginner drivers acquire critical and practical skills to drive safely and responsibly.

STEP 1

Applying for a Theory Test

Eligibility:

First-time applicants for a learner permit or those upgrading within car or bike categories (e.g., B to BE or A1 to A2) must complete the Driver Theory Test.

Format:

The test is computerized, consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions.

Preparation Material:

Available as a book or CD ROM (approx €22) from any good bookshop.

Application:

  • Online at www.theorytest.ie.
  • Test centers are located nationwide, including Spring Garden Lodge, Sallins Road, Naas.

STEP 2

Eyesight Report

Eligibility:

Obtain an NDLS ‘Driving Licence Eyesight Report Form’ completed by a registered Medical Practitioner or Optometrist.

Validity:

Must be submitted to NDLS within 1 month of issue. If upgrading your license and it’s been over 5 years since your last eyesight report, a new one is required.

STEP 3

Acquiring Your Learner Permit

Documentation:

Present your Theory Test certificate, Photographic ID, Eyesight Report, and completed Learner Permit form at your local NDLS office.

Additional Requirements:

Proof of residency entitlement, address, and PPSN.

Note:

NDLS takes photos on application day. For car and motorbike categories, a 6-month holding period from the date of issue is required before sitting a driving test (not applicable for Car & Trailer BE category).

STEP 4

tRAINING

12 one-hour EDT lessons with an ADI are mandatory for first-time learner permit holders (issued after April 4, 2011) before the driving test.

From December 6, 2010, new learner permit holders must complete IBT before road access. It consists of 16 or 18 hours, divided into modules.

No set lesson amount for BE category. An ADI will assess and advise on the required number of lessons.
